let's recycle!

Yay—let's recycle! Here’s a quick guide for when you've finished using all your products:

1. Make the products 'recycle ready' by rinsing it out and cleaning it. What if the product doesn't work for me? Give it to someone who might like to try it! That way, you will minimise wastage and give the product a second home. ♡♡

2. Get the DETAILS! Typically, most skin care packaging is recyclable in Australia, but what can and can’t be recycled depends on where you live. A quick Google search will reveal a recycling guideline based on your state / territory.

3. Can I put this in my recycling bin? If you've checked and the answer is 'yes', give these items a second life and put them in the recycling bin. If it's not, look into enterprises like TerraCycle, to help you properly recycle your beauty products. If the product is recycable through TerraCycle, it is FREE and all you have to do is gather your empty products together, print a recycling label and ship it out - that’s it! They’ll take care of the rest for you.

FYI, recycling plants uses numbers ranging from 1 to 7 to help sort all the materials. PETE stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate and PP stands for Polypropylene — these are both plastics. PAP represents paper / mixed paper / cardboard. See Earth Easy to learn more about your plastics.

That's it babes! Remember to love our earth; love our planet! #dontbetrashy

Anyone and everyone! Black Girl Sunscreen dries completely clear so it’s perfect to use before any outdoor activity or under your favourite makeup products. Try it as a primer, or as a standalone day cream.

The best practice is to apply 30 minutes before going outside to allow the sunscreen to bind to your skin. Re-apply every two hours of exposure and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Even when it's cloudy, up to 80 percent of the sun's UV radiation still reaches the earth. For more information, see Cancer Council Australia's information on sunscreen here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Black Girl Sunscreen any good?

Black Girl Sunscreen is incredible. It is absolutely invisible, sinks into the skin fast, doesn't irritate and leaves a healthy sheen. It's clean, vegan, cruelty-free and made with non-toxic ingredients. It's a favourite of the Kanvas Beauty staff!

What sunscreen is best for black skin?

It comes down to a matter of personal preference, but Black Girl Sunscreen was made for people of colour by a person of colour (Shontay Lundy). We love to support amazing black-owned businesses like this one.

Is Black Girl Sunscreen different?

What makes Black Girl Sunscreen different (as in, different good) is that it actually enhances your skin. Sometimes we look at SPF protection like a necessary evil - but it can make our face look too greasy, or leave a white cast, or worse, can make us break out. But Black Girl Sunscreen boasts one of the cleanest formulas on the market, and actually makes your skin glow. It can also be used on its own as moisturizer!

What SPF should black people use?

Black Girl Sunscreen comes in with an SPF30, which allows only 3% of UVB rays to reach your skin. This is adequate for all skin types, along with frequent reapplication. You can also use an SPF50 (i.e. BGS Kids), but that only dials up the protection level by 1%, allowing 2% of UVB rays to reach your skin.

Can I use Black Girl Sunscreen as a moisturizer?

You certainly can use Black Girl Sunscreen as a moisturizer. Nourishing avocado and jojoba oils hydrate the skin and leave it looking dewy and healthy. If you have oily skin, this is what we'd recommend. However if your skin is on the dry side, combining it with a moisturizer will be better for you.
