She Wears Sunscreen by the Seashore

"Nothing looks better in your fifties than sunscreen in your twenties."

Hello Kanvas Kult babes, not trying to be preachy, but we're going to talk about sunscreen / sun block today. As we get older, the importance of sunscreen cannot be emphasized enough. Have you ever seen older people who have undergone excessive tanning in their youth? Don't get us wrongwe love a good tanning sesh and how it makes us feel, but we also do it knowing we are protected. Excessive tanning without proper protection can give you fine and deep wrinkles when you're still young. This is because the sun dries out your skin and contributes to early skin aging (Yikes!). Our philosophy is that prevention is always better than cure. Unfortunately, many people stillundermine the damaging effects the sun can have on their skin. The negative affects of the sun doesn't rear its ugly head until people are much older and by then, the damage has already been done. Worst case is that it can lead to skin cancer and that's why we're going to stress how important using the right sunscreen is for you (esp. something with ahigh SPF and PA level).

About UV

Despite all the good things you may hear about sunshine and how its the best source of vitamin D (#DatTanDoe), it produces harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation damages skin cells, which causes sunburn, premature ageing and worst of all, skin cancer and using sunscreen is an effective way to reduce the risk of all these things!

If you have makeup on, you should still apply a little sun block, especially if you're going out in the sun. There are powder formulas available so that your cream foundation won't rub off. Getting into the habit of putting sunscreen on everyday is going to help your skin in the long run. Below are our top choices of sunscreen you can use that won't leave a greasy residue and you'll look like a glowing beach babe. Remember to always keep these gems in your bag! That way, you can always re-apply it consistently throughout the day (we recommend every two hoursit's better to be safe than sorry).

  1. PURITO Centella Unscented Sunscreen (also comes scented so you can smell divine!)

If you couldn’t use sunscreen because you were put off by its strong scent or because your skin doesn’t take well to natural essential oils, you should try Purito Centella Unscented Sunscreen. The new cica-care formula enhances the skin barrier to provide better protection from strong UV rays and external stimuli. The product contains mild and safe ingredients that are EWG Green Level Grades 1 and 2 to avoid side effects of the existing chemical sunscreens such as eye and skin irritation. It shouldn't cause any discomfort, even when applied to sensitive skin (sensitive skin peeps, we got you!). If applying sunscreen before makeup was a hassle because of the white cast and the stifling feeling, Centella Unscented Sunscreen is perfect for you because it will glide on your skin (very thin, transparent layer) and doesn’t leave a heavy finish.

More Benefits

1. Using proprietary technology, the odours are masked of all its raw ingredients to offer you a completely unscented sunscreen.

2. Suitable, even for sensitive skin, as it does not contain natural essential oils.

3. It provides a more effective protection from external stimuli and ultraviolet rays by strengthening the skin barrier with the upgraded, highly-concentrated super centella component.

4. The product contains only EWG Green Level Grade 1 and 2 components and does not cause skin or eye irritation.

5. Spreads in a thin and transparent layer to facilitate the application of makeup.

6. Uses SPF50+ PA++++ and photostable UV filter to provide soft yet powerful protection from ultraviolet rays.

2.Soft Airy UV Essence SPF50+ PA++++

"The Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence is an everyday sun protector for sensitive skin."

As is it water-based, it holds a gel-type texture to give a soft weightless and light finish. Also with its high SPF and PA level, it completely guards the skin against UVA, UVB without leaving any greasiness or a "white cast". Klairs claims that this is a water-based sunscreen, that is non-sticky, light, and fresh. Apply the Soft Airy UV Essence after using this line to shield your skin from UV lights and enhance vitamin effects.

This sunscreen contains ingredients that help to brighten, hydrate, and protect:

  • Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil (aka Sea Buckthorn Oil), in Korean cosmetic, the ingredient is listed as 'Vitamin Tree Oil' and it helps to supply the skin with moisture.

  • Tocopherol is an antioxidant that fights against free radicals found in the skin.

  • Panthenol, beta-glucan, and allantoin soothes, relieves skin irritations.

  • Niacinamide is a skin brightening agent and helps to brighten the overall skin tone.

3. Krave Beauty - The Beet Shield Sun Screen

This is a gentle, antioxidant-rich day fluid that protects your skin from harsh environmental stressors. The Beet Shield boasts a lightweight, non-white cast leaving formula that’s charged with beetroot extract and antioxidants to fight against the free radicals so you don’t turn beet-red.

You can apply it Monday through Sunday, every morning. Apply a generous amount evenly onto face, neck, and chest. The Beet Shield comes in as the LAST STEP of your skincare routine, after your moisturizer. Apply at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors and re-apply as needed.

Pro tip: You can totally ditch a makeup primer when using The Beet Shield.

Beetroot extract

An underrated yet amazingly antioxidant-rich vegetable, the beetroot holds skin enhancing properties like preventing signs of aging, reducing pigmentation and blemishes and moisturization! A true underdog superfood.

Allantoin

Allantoin soothes skin and relieves skin irritation. This is an absolutely wonderful ingredient which brings both moisturizing and soothing relief to a sensitive, inflamed skin.

Vitamin C, Resveratrol, EGCG

This powerful tag team of antioxidants is proven to shield skin against external stressors and neutralize free radicals.

Oh, before we move onto some honourable mentions, you can grab the Beet Shieldhere.

  • Dear, Klairs Mid Day Blue UV Shield SPF50+ PA++++

  • Dr. Jart+ - Every Sun Day Mild Sun

  • COSRX -Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF50+ PA+++

Tips and fun-facts:

  • The SPF number is the level of protection the sunscreen provides against UVB rays - a higher number means more protection.

  • Make sure that you let your sunscreen dry before you put on any makeup or any other creams. Also, be aware of the directions of how to apply it.

  • The best practice is to apply 30 minutes before venturing outside to allow the sunscreen to bind to your skin. Re-apply every two hours of exposure and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Even when it's cloudy, up to 80 percent of the sun's UV radiation reaches the earth.

Well, there you have it! Our top / recommended sunscreens! If you know, you know. Be sun smart and always wear sunscreen.

XOXO
