The Best Beauty of Joseon Products

Here are the best Beauty of Joseon products (from someone who has actually used ALL of them, and wasn't paid to do so lol). And scroll down to the bottom for an honest Beauty of Joseon review on EVERY product in 100 words or less (for all of you with a short attention span).

Alright no time to waste, here are our top 5 Beauty of Joseon products!

1. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice+Probiotics

Are we surprised? Look, it's not MY personal favourite Beauty of Joseon product (it's close, though), but it's in this spot for its popularity, and the sheer fact that it made a lot of people realize sunscreen can actually be a skin-enhancing part of your routine. It DOESN'T have to be a greasy mess you have to put up with in order to protect yourself! Little wonder then, that Beauty of Joseon's Relief Sun Probiotics Sun Essence was an instant hit as soon as it launched. This chemical formula is lightweight, a tad moisturizing and finishes satiny-dewy. For me it didn't burn my eyes (big plus) and didn't block pores / cause irritation, although I will say that re-applying it for the 3rd time in a day gave my already-oily skin a bit more sheen than I would have liked.

2. The Glow Deep Serum

Let me preface this by saying you can't go wrong with a Beauty of Joseon serum especially if you have dry and sensitive skin, but the Glow Deep Serum is my personal favourite. I struggled with using vitamin C serums and acids on my rosacea-prone skin, and even when I needed to re-build my skin barrier, I was not ready to abandon my skin-brightening ambitions. The Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep serum was perfect. I didn't feel like I was offending my sensitive skin by using it. The serum had soothing ingredients to calm things down, but also 2% arbutin and rice extracts to make an actual difference to my complexion.

3. Beauty of Joseon Revive Ginseng+Retinal Eye Serum

The Revive Ginseng & Retinal (2%) Eye Serum comes in at number 3 for making a scary ingredient for us sensitive types (retinoids) actually very approachable and lovable! Retinal (with an 'a') is very similar to retinol and will lead to the same results - however, retinal purports to do it quicker, with a much higher exfoliation rate than standard retinol. You'd think, therefore, that this is one solely for experienced retinol users given the faster skin cell turnover rate (increasing the risk of irritation. But it's still surprisingly gentle and hydrating, while delivering excellent results. We've heard reviewers call it the affordable dupe to Medik8's Crystal Retinal 3. If you're noticing fine lines around the eye contour area, this retinal serum is definitely worth a try.

4. Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm

In number 4 is a personal favourite of the Kanvas Beauty team! The Beauty of Joseon's Radiance Cleansing Balm feels and works like a high-end product (but isn't priced like one). It is seriously spa-like, and there is nothing to dislike or even feel indifferent about. Ingredients? Beautiful. The sherbet formula includes brightening rice water and fermented grains. The performance? Elite. It remove absolutely everything, from stubborn makeup to excess sebum. And the experience? Chef's kiss. It's luxe from the way it melts like butter upon contact with skin, to the residue-free finish. And it’s worth adding that one jar lasts for ages. In fact, we’d bet that if you’re not a double fan of double cleansing, this balm will convert you. It’s one of those products that you feel weirdly excited to use.

5. The Dynasty Cream

And rounding out our top 5 is the Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream! This affordable anti-aging moisturizer blends natural ingredients such as ginseng, rice extracts and honey to brighten and tighten skin for a more youthful complexion. If you want a deep dive into its ingredients and performance on combination skin, check out this Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream Review here. One of our favourite things about this cream is its dense, sort-of “chewy” texture, making it more interesting than your standard moisturizer. It's not a boring cream, but clean and simple enough to work in harmony in a routine full of active ingredients.

Beauty of Joseon Reviews in 100 words or less

  • Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen review: Dewy, not greasy. No cast. Feels like a moisturiser. Best on dry to balanced skin. Can get a bit shiny after multiple re-application. Sits well under makeup.

  • Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum review: Good for acne-prone AND dry skin. 2% niacinamide and propolis. Hydrating. Use in combination with retinoids or acids. Makes skin smoother.

  • Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum review:Snail serum. Not goopy. Best used on persistently dry skin. Can be too occlusive for oily skin. Use after exfoliating or scrubbing. Try it after Green Plum Toner for a visible difference in your skin texture.

  • Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum review: Green tea and panthenol serum. Use on damaged skin barrier or rosacea-prone skin. Viscous, feels so good. Once your skin recovers, upgrade to Glow Deep.

  • Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum review:Arbutin serum. Works without damaging your skin barrier. Needs at least 2+ months of consistent use to see results though.

  • Beauty of Joseon Eye Serumreview: Contains a retinoid, but doesn't dry skin out. Feels moisturising but pat a little face cream over it if you have dry skin. Actually yields results in the fine line department.

  • Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm review: Spa-level balm cleanser. Clean, feels good, gets makeup off, no residue. Doesn't burn eyes.

  • Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream review: Moisturising, pudding-like, not heavy. Suits a layered routine, pairs well with retinol. Sits well under makeup, doesn't melt off your face by the end of the day.

  • Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Refreshing Cleanserreview: Mildly acidic gel cleanser. Those with ultra dry skin found it too drying, those with super oily skin say it doesn't clean enough, so the sweet spot is slightly dry - combo skin.

  • Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Refreshing Toner review: Gentle 2% glycolic acid and 0.5% salicylic acid. Good for mild acne, texture, and hyperpigmentation. Doesn't damage skin barrier but wouldn't use it more than 4x per week.

  • Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick review:Smooth and super mattifying. For oily skin only. A bit powdery on initial use but that fades. And the matte look actually LASTS for hours (huzzah!).

  • Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water review: Watery, herbal essence with 2% niacinamide. Not super moisturising, better for oily/combo skin. Doesn't irritate, layers well and helps prep for a vit C or retinol serum.

  • Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil review: Mid-weight, herbally oil that takes off makeup and SPF really well. Doesn't sting eyes. Feels nourishing, like I'm doing my skin a favour lol.

  • Beauty of Joseon Light On Serum: Centella + Vita C review: Lovely serum, a bit strong for very sensitive skin (too tingly on mine) so make sure your skin barrier is in good shape before use. Liked it on dry skin.

  • Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Sun Serum review: Chemical SPF in a thin-serum, slight fragrance. Best used under mineral makeup or BB cream. Dewy finish, avoid if oily skinned.

  • Beauty of Joseon Peeling Gel review:Gentle chemical exfoliator, jelly-like texture, smells mildly fruity. Apply on dry skin. Makes skin smoother. Will be too mild for those used to stronger stuff, but good for those who like to exfoliate often.

  • Beauty of Joseon Red Bean Water Gel Cream review: Watery, best for oily and dehydrated skin. Layer it over a hydrating toner or essence. Not enough moisture for very dry skin.

  • Beauty of Joseon Red Bean Refreshing Pore Maskreview: Gorgeous, earthy, spa-like mask for oily skin, doesn't suck all the moisture out like a typical clay mask.

  • Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen Relief Sun Aqua-Freshreview: Ultra lightweight, no caste, matte finish. Would use this as a base, and re-apply with the Matte Sun Stick so no sheen builds up during the day.

  • Beauty of Joseon Ground Rice and Honey Glow Maskreview: Grainy, porridge texture, love the smell, actually makes your skin immediately smoother and pores look less noticeable. Addictive.

  • Beauty of Joseon Glow Replenishing Rice Milk review: Watery, slightly hydrating, does the job of prepping, and free from niacinamide if you're one of those people who are sensitive to it (it is in literally everything these days).

FAQs:

Q: Is Beauty of Joseon good or is it just average with an amazing marketing team?
A: Short answer, Beauty of Joseon is a great brand - and their marketing team (while highly effective) doesn't engage in any unscrupulous practices like fake reviews (see below). Take all the hype out of it, and you're still left with good skincare that seems to suit virtually everyone.

Q: Are Beauty of Joseon reviews legit?
A: Unlike say, Pyunkang Yul or Laneige, Beauty of Joseon is more famous ouside of Korea than within. In fact, the brand barely does any of its marketing back home. It's available in Korea as a drugstore brand, but for whatever reason, really suited the skincare needs of the West. The reviews are legit (not fake), and that is why so many of them are written in English.

Q: Why is Beauty of Joseon famous?
A: We've stocked Beauty of Joseon for a while, but can say that it really took off after the release of its sunscreen back in 2020/21.The Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen really took off because it was one of the few back in that wasn't greasy and claggy, left a dewy rather than oily finish, and didn't irritate skin - even for those with seborrheic dermatitis. From our point of view  as a retailer, that was the real turning point for Beauty of Joseon, and its popularity really took off in the Western Beauty world afterwards.

Q: What skin type is Beauty of Joseon good for / most suited to?
A: In reality, Beauty of Joseon is good for any skin type - even though the brand positions itself towards sensitive skin. There is a product in its arsenal for all of us, but if you have reactive skin on the dry or dehydrated side, you can pretty much build an entire routine from Beauty of Joseon products.

Q: Is a Beauty of Joseon serum worth it?
A: We've never met a Beauty of Joseon Serum we didn't like, but whether you think it's worth it depends on your skin and which serum you chose. We haven't actually come across reviews calling Beauty of Joseon serums a waste of money because, on top of being a good skincare brand, they are also eminently affordable.

Q: Is Beauty of Joseon cruelty-free?
A: Beauty of Joseon is 100% cruelty-free. While Korea has banned cosmetic testing on animals, Korean brands selling within China are required by the Chinese government to test their products. Hence, some Korean brands still test on animals where required by its international markets. Fortunately however, Beauty of Joseon is not one of them.

Q: Is Beauty of Joseon Vegan?
A: Although Beauty of Joseon is cruelty-free, it isn’t certified vegan. With that said, Beauty of Joseon offers vegan-friendly products, including its popular Green Plum AHA Toner and Ginseng Essence.

Q: Is Beauty of Joseon clean?
A: While there’s no universal definition of clean, we’d venture to say that by most standards (including by Kanvas Beauty’s own definition), Beauty of Joseon is a clean beauty brand. You won’t find any parabens, sulfates, dyes, artificial fragrances or drying alcohols in its formulas.
